Lewis and Clark’s expedition began with the training of its 45 “Corps of Volunteers” at Camp DuBois in St. Louis, Missouri. Traveling at an average of about 15 miles a day by boat, the trip was rough, leading the Corps along the Missouri to the Columbia River, which wound to the Pacific Ocean. They arrived on the West Coast more than a year later in November 1805 and returned back to St. Louis two years and four months after their departure.:
